The resulting increased circulation of cool air onto the scalp may have thus served to facilitate the body-temperature-regulation system of hominids while they lived on the open savannah. Īccording to Robbins (2012), afro-textured hair may have been adaptive for the earliest modern humans in Africa because the relatively sparse density of such hair, combined with its elastic helix shape, results in an airy effect. The author argues that afro-textured hair was the original hair texture of all modern humans prior to the "Out-of-Africa" migration that populated the rest of the globe. Robbins (2012) suggests that afro-textured hair may have initially evolved because of an adaptive need amongst humans' early hominid ancestors for protection against the intense UV radiation of the sun in Africa. Main article: Hair § Texture Papuan women with afro hair This is because the former hair texture is typical of the large populations inhabiting the Far East as well as the indigenous peoples of the Americas. ![]() In humans worldwide, East Asian-textured hair is the most common, whereas kinky hair is the least common. ![]() Afro-textured hair has a flattened cross-section and is finer, and its ringlets can form tight circles with diameters of only a few millimeters. East Asiatic heads of straight hair are formed from almost-round hair follicles producing straight hair, and European hair follicle forms oval shapes which produce wavy hair. The cross-section of a hair is an ellipse, which can tend towards a circle or be distinctly flattened. An individual hair's shape is never completely circular. The shape of the hair follicle determines the hair's curliness. The more coiled the hair texture, the higher its shrinkage. Shrinkage is most evident when afro-textured hair is (or has recently been) wet. In addition, due to a phenomenon called 'shrinkage', kinky hair that is a given length when stretched straight can appear much shorter when allowed to naturally coil. Loussourarn found that afro-textured hair grows at an average rate of approximately 256 micrometers per day, whereas European-textured straight hair grows at approximately 396 micrometers per day. This was significantly lower than that of European hair, which, on average, has approximately 227 hairs per square centimeter. Specifically, the average density of afro-textured hair was found to be approximately 190 hairs per square centimeter. Classical afro-textured hair has been found to be not as densely concentrated on the scalp as other follicle types. have found that black hair may differ in the distribution of lipids throughout the hair shaft. With regard to structure, all human hair has the same basic chemical composition in terms of keratin protein content. ĭifferent genetic groups have observable differences in the structure, density, and growth rate of hair. ![]() Those variations include pattern (mainly tight coils), pattern size (watch spring to chalk), density (sparse to dense), strand diameter (fine, medium, coarse), and feel (cottony, woolly, spongy). However, afro-textured hair is often difficult to categorize because of the many different variations among individuals. The Andre Walker Hair Typing System classifies afro-textured hair as 'type 4' (there are other types of hair, defined as type 1 for straight hair, type 2 for wavy, and type 3 for curly, with the letters A, B, and C used as indicators of the degree of coil variation in each type), with the subcategory of type 4C being most exemplary of the afro-textured hair. In 1997, hairstylist Andre Walker created a numerical grading system for human hair types. Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent in 1825 introduced the scientific term Oulotrichi for the purpose of human taxonomy. More formally, ulotrichous ('curly-haired' from Ancient Greek: οὖλος, romanized: oûlos, lit.'crisp, curly' and Ancient Greek: θρίξ, romanized: thríx, lit.'hair') refers to afro-textured hair, its antonym being leiotrichous ('smooth-haired'). Terminology Įnglish adjectives such as woolly, kinky, or spiraled have been used to describe natural afro-textured hair. The overall effect is such that, contrasted with straight hair, wavy hair, or curly hair, afro-textured hair appears denser. Each strand of this hair type grows in a tiny, angle-like helix shape. 1868Īfro-textured hair is a human hair texture originally prevalent in many regions with hot climates, including in sub-Saharan Africa. What Is a Transmission Flush? A Transmission Allows Cars to Run at a Certain SpeedĪny car owner knows that the transmission plays a crucial function in running a vehicle. Read on to get in-depth information about transmission fluid flushes and signs your vehicle needs one. A mechanic removes old, dirty fluid from the transmission pan during this procedure and replaces it with new fluid. The purpose of a transmission fluid flush is to prevent potential transmission issues and keep your vehicle in good shape. I’ve put together this guide to answer some of your essential questions about a transmission fluid flush to understand better how crucial it is. To learn more or to schedule a service appointment, call us today at 91.A transmission flush is an important but often ignored procedure to maintain car health. We have been fixing and maintaining cars for five decades, and we will ensure that your vehicle keeps running for years to come. In fact, our shop is the first in Oklahoma to offer 100 percent transmission flush services, meaning we can perform a full system flush to make sure your vehicle is running at peak performance. Without fluid, your transmission is running with just the metal pieces inside rubbing together, which will inevitably lessen the life of this integral system in your vehicle.Īt Builders Transmission, our mechanics pride themselves on their skills under the hood, especially when it comes to transmission issues. Transmission fluid is instrumental in keeping the transmission running smoothly. The contamination risk is heightened in an automatic transmission due to the greater level of heat produced. Having your transmission flushed can clear out this debris and even identify failing components before issues become serious. Why? Your transmission fluid is susceptible to contamination from metal particles that can find their way into the fluid due to the wearing out of bearings and gears. It may seem like a transmission flush is just another excuse to bring your car into the shop, but this procedure is essential to the proper function of your transmission. For an automatic transmission, you should get this service every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. For manual transmissions, it is recommended that you get the fluid changed every 15,000 miles with heavy-duty use and 30,000 to 60,000 miles for normal use. How often you need to get your transmission flushed depends on the type of engine you have and how often you use your vehicle. Transmission fluid is the blood of your vehicle – it’s even colored red! – so making sure that the system is clean and well maintained is paramount to keeping your vehicle running perfectly.įlushing your transmission fluid on a regular basis is vital, although you do not need to have it done as frequently as you would get an oil change. When working properly, the transmission acts as a sophisticated system that shifts gears to keep your car or truck operating smoothly. Your transmission is one of the most important components of your vehicle. Posted by Jeff McCollough & filed under Driving Tips, Transmission Fluids. This means the position of the bones around the talus are affected and might not fit together the same way they would if there wasn't an injury. Type 3 talus fractures have the same sort of separation as a type 2 fracture with the addition of an ankle dislocation. In this case, two out of the three arteries feeding the talus could be damaged. In a type 2 talus fracture, the bone can be reduced (put back together) almost always, but there can be some long-term damage and possible necrosis of the bone. Type 2 talus fractures have a clear separation across the fracture, but the talus still remains mostly in place within the ankle.A type 1 talus fracture usually heals well without any necrosis (death) of the bone. Only one of the three blood vessels supplying the talus is typically affected. Type 1 talus fractures have a clear vertical fracture line, but very little, if any, separation of the two parts of the talus and it remains in the proper anatomical position within the ankle.Elevating the limb encourages the swelling and tissue fluids to flow away from the site of injury. A severely broken ankle may require surgery to implant plates, rods or screws into the broken bone to maintain proper position during healing. Treatment for a broken ankle depends on the exact site and severity of the bone fracture. Due to the rarity of these injuries, most of the literature published on treatment, complications, and outcomes has been limited to case series, preventing the ability to draw definitive conclusions 110. Compression & elevationĬompression with an ankle taping or compression bandage will protect the joint from further injury and help reduce swelling. Fractures can range from tiny cracks in your bones to breaks that pierce your skin. Talar neck fractures have traditionally been quoted to account of less than 1 of all fractures. Then reduce the frequency as symptoms improve. ![]() You can apply cold for 10 to 15 minutes every hour for the first 24 to 48 hours. Wrap it in a wet tea towel, or use a commercially available hot and cold pack which are often more convenient. Ice should not be applied directly to the skin. Cold therapyĪpply ice or cold therapy immediately after the injury. If you suspect a severe sprain or a fracture then seek immediate medical assistance. Continuing to walk or play while it is painful will increase swelling and slow the healing process. Rest is important both immediately after injury as well as whilst the injury is healing. Initial treatment should involve applying the PRICE principles of rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Other bones in the ankle such as the talus may also fracture during an eversion ankle sprain depending on the severity of the injury. Therefore, an eversion ankle sprain often occurs with a fibula fracture, called a Pott’s fracture. If however, the fibula fractures then there is nothing preventing excess ankle eversion. Also, the medial ligaments are much stronger than the lateral ligaments on the outside. As a result, it is difficult for the deltoid ligaments to overstretch. This is because the fibula restricts the ankle from rolling in (everting). It is rare that the deltoid ligaments tear. These ligaments provide support to prevent the ankle from turning inwards or everting. What is an ankle eversion sprain?Īn eversion sprain is a tear of the deltoid ligaments, on the inside of the ankle.
